Celebrity Branding
Celebrity branding is a kind of advertising that uses the name, image, and/or voice of a celebrity to promote a product or service. Celebrity branding depends largely on the status of the celebrity. Some celebrities sign deals to promote existing companies. Other celebrities start companies of their own.
Celebrity branding is very common. Almost every actor or music artist has used their names on their own clothing, perfume, or cosmetics line. Athletes have endorsed products ranging from athletic shoes to soup.
Celebrity branding can have its drawbacks, though. If the celebrity falls out of the spotlight, their name and image will have less influence on consumers. A celebrity who has been disgraced may drag the brand they endorse down with them.
However, this presents an interesting conundrum. But still, a mildly embarrassing situation involving a celebrity draws media attention. This may keep the celebrity in the public eye enough to increase their endorsement influence.
